For example, you cant always leave a difficult job or get a raise when finances are tight, and there will always be some difficult people you simply need to deal with. Some stress simply must be managed, and it can be life-changing when you find strategies that help you deal with stress in a way that minimizes its negative effects. One of these tools, which is becoming more popular, is acceptance and commitment therapy (ATC). This is a form of counseling that is similar to cognitive-behavior therapy, which has been shown by many studies to be effective with stress management. ACT combines the use of acceptance of stressors in ones life and mindfulness strategies mixed in different ways with commitment and behavior-change strategies that can increase psychological and emotional flexibility. History of ATC This approach was originally named comprehensive distancing and was founded in 1982 by psychologist Steven C. Hayes. It has since been fleshed out and worked into a more robust approach to change. Now there are several different protocols for ACT that change depending on the situation and type of stress faced, as well as the setting. For example, there is a brief version of ACT called focused acceptance and commitment therapy, also known as FACT. The goal of ACT  (and FACT) is not to eliminate difficult feelings, but to be present with them and accept them, which can create greater comfort with them so that people are able to move beyond the barriers that these feelings create. Acceptance and commitment therapy invites people to open up to unpleasant feelings and learn not to overreact to them or avoid situations where they are invoked. Its therapeutic effect is a positive upward spiral of emotion where feeling better leads to a better understanding of the truth. Principles ACT commonly employs six core principles to help clients develop psychological flexibility. Cognitive defusion: Learning methods to reduce the tendency to  reify  thoughts, images, emotions, and memories.Acceptance: Allowing thoughts to come and go without struggling with them.Contact with the present moment: Awareness of the here and now, experienced with openness, interest, and receptiveness.The observing self: Accessing a transcendent sense of self, a continuity of consciousness which is unchanging.Values: Discovering what is most important to oneself.Committed action: Setting goals according to values and carrying them out responsibly. Correlational evidence has found that absence of psychological flexibility predicts many forms of psychopathology. A 2005  meta-analysis  showed that the six ACT principles, on average, account for 16 to 29 percent of the variance in psychopathology (general mental health, depression, anxiety) at baseline, depending on the measure, using correlational methods. ACT-Based Strategies Mindfulness and Meditation Because the main goal of ACT is  to accept ones present circumstances, become more comfortable with them, and then be empowered to move beyond them with minimal stress, meditation is an extremely helpful tool for this kind of stress. The practice of mindfulness and meditation can allow you to practice being aware of stressors and then letting go of the need to react. This can minimize the stress you feel as well as the tendency many of us have to overreact to stress we experience when we feel trapped. This can come in the form of rumination, catastrophizing, and other stress-exacerbating habits that many of us engage in whether were aware of it or not. The following are some meditation techniques that can be used for stress relief. Reappraisal We cant always change what we experience, but we can change how we think about these experiences. This is a core belief of ACT. Changing your thoughts about the stress you experience can come in the form of cognitive restructuring or cognitive reappraisals, where you actively work to choose new ways of viewing the same situation. These views may not be the first thoughts you had on the topic, but they can be just as aligned with the realities of the situation. For example, when facing a challenge that feels beyond your capabilities (a commonly stressful situation), I am failing at this, can be changed to, I am having a difficult time with this. Its all part of the process, though, and Ill get it eventually. Similarly, This should not be happening to me, can be changed to, We all face challenges, and heres one of mine. Ill get through this. Deliberate Acceptance Sometimes stress can be greatly minimized when we give up the fight and trust the process. When we feel we need to struggle against something that may not necessarily be changeable, we can feel overwhelmed with a virtually impossible task. When we accept a situation and let go of our own need to control it (which often is impossible, anyway), this can feel like lifting a weight off our shoulders and can greatly relieve the stress of whatever situation we face. Making friends with the situations we had been fighting can be a liberating process and, interestingly, can help us to move on from feeling stuck and trapped into a place of recognizing what is and what can be done about it. Choosing Purposeful Action A primary goal with ACT is to choose an action that can be taken and to move forward in a positive, productive direction. One strategy that can help with this is to increase the positive experiences you have so that you can create an upward spiral of positivity. Another is to simply look at the situation you are in (and accept this situation) and then look for options you can choose within this reality rather than trying to change the reality itself by fighting your overall circumstances. This can be achieved with the help of a therapist, a journaling practice,  or talks with a good friend who understands. In order for living creatures to survive, a stable environment must exist. Although the environment is crucial for mans survival, man has been destroying it since the beginning of time. Man has been destroying trees for the use of wood for centuries. Today with an increasing population the amount of wood available has declined seriously in recent decades. People have been harvesting wood to cultivate land, burn, and for the use of raw materials for industry (Urquhart 2014). The estimated amount of deforestation taking place is twenty million hectares per year (Urquhart 2014). Climate change and global warming are just a few of the problems associated with the degradation of our forests. It is so damaging because to get the machinery into a forest they must cut down trees to form a pathway. By forming this pathway the trees in the way become useless because they were bulldozed out of the ground. Population affects the land differently by the ways people use the lands. From 1990 to 2000 closed forests lost a lot of land. The closed forests worldwide lost 34.8 million hectares and other land cover lost 21.6 million hectares. The total landmass of this loss of forests is comparable to the size of France (Marcoux). Most of this land was lost due to permanent agriculture and pastures. This is a lot of land over a ten year period that people have destroyed when they could have used other methods of farming to gain more profit and conserve land. This type of farming also leads to rapid population growth in these areas, which are taking more and more forestland. The rapid growth comes from people trying to seek land to colonize for it’s farming, or by agricultural entrepreneurs trying to make commercial operations (Marcoux). After the change from closed forest to open forest farmers took another 9 million hectares. History of Christianity Within the Roman Empire Religion, one of the most important and controversial topics of all times, but where exactly did it come from? There are many religions known today but in this paper I will focus on only one, Christianity. E. with one man named Jesus Christ from Galilee. When he was around 30 he spoke about a kingdom in heaven and not on Earth, conservatives called him a false profit who undermined the Jewish religion, by calling himself the son of God. Jesus went to the land to spread his simple teachings that were based upon to love God and one another, to care for each other and help those in need. The Roman saw him as revolutionary and decided to keep a close watch over him, scared that he might would cause a problem due to his such large base of followers. It wasn’t long until the Sadducees, who had control over Judea where Jesus did most of his teachings, could’t take much more. The fear of Jesus and his followers turning into a revolt against them, lead the Sadducees to turn to the Romans for help to get him out and take away the threat he may propose. They ask the Romans to arrest Jesus Christ and execute him because he was committing blasphemy, saying he was the son of God and that was prohibited. Since they couldn’t condemn anyone to death, they wanted the Romans to do it from them because they on the other hand could and so they did. Jesus was arrested on Holy Thursday and had he trial the next day on Friday. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor was over his trial and even though Pilate did not agree with the Sadducees on the execution of Jesus, he still with through with it. When he announces the execution of Jesus Christ to the public he lets them know as well that this was not his order and has nothing to do with it but what he’s doing is simply carrying out what the Sadducees wanted to be done. Executing someone because of their religion couldn’t be done so in order for it to be done they executed him under insurrection and labeled him enemy of the state. His death began the rise of Christianity all around the land including with in the Roman Empire. Another important person in the spread of Christianity was Saul of Tauses, who later became Paul when he became a Christian. His played a great role in preaching the gospel, planting churches and establishing Christianity through out the land and around the Mediterranean Basin. He was naturally a Roman citizen and for a long time was against Christians helping in the prosecution of the church of God and cooperating in the killing of early Christians. Paul reached out to everyone including the Gentiles who were not of Jewish decent, trying to inform them of his new found religion and beliefs. After the end of his third missionary journey he was arrested and brought to Rome to have trial for his alleged crime. For two years he waited for his trial and during that time he preached from his home about the gospel but not too long after it was said that he was beheaded in Rome under the reign of Nero. At this time Christianity began to spread through Rome like a wild fire. The summer after the deaths of Jesus Christ and St. Paul Christianity began to become even more popular amongst the poorer people in Rome in 64. That year Rome had a horrible fire that lasted six days, destroying most of the city. It was rumored that the emperor of the time Nero, was to be blamed for the fire. That he did it for his own personal amusement. To take the focus and blame off of him, he placed the accusations on the Christians saying they started the fire and was to blame. This event in start of many horrific deaths of Christians, having them tortured, and treating them being killed as a sport all for the pleasure of Nero and the Roman citizens. This lasted for about the next 100 years or so and throughout this time many Christian churches were destroyed, meetings held for Christians were forbidden and those who refused to follow the rules lost their legal rights. The Romans believed that Christianity was to be disturbing a mans mind in such a way that he is really going insane and causing him to loose humanity. After years and years of Negativity and Hostility by the Roman empire things finally started to turn around with the emperor Constantine and his new enforced reform. Before the battle of Milvan, Constantine saw the Christian symbol and put it all over him and his armies battle gear and because they win the battle he in 313 he makes the Edict of Milan. The Edict of Milan legalized Christian worship by removing all discriminating legislation against them from the statute book and making the church to be recognized by civil authorities. Constantine officially stared the acceptance of Christianity in the Rome and even after his death the spread and acceptance of Christianity didn’t stop. Once the church obtained its freedom, it became more structured and stable within itself. Around 323 Christianity was made the official religion of Rome and by the end of the fourth century, the majority of the Roman citizens had converted over to the religion. Christianity played a huge role in Roman history and there are many more influential people and events that took place during this time. When you have anorexia, you often equate thinness with self-worth. Onset is pre-teen early adulthood. Anorexia Nervosa: What is it? (Ekern, 2017)Two types:Binge/Purge TypeThe individual suffering from this type of eating disorder, will purge when he or she eats. This is typically a result of the overwhelming feelings of guilt a sufferer would experience in relation to eating; they compensate by vomiting, abusing laxatives, or excessively exercising. Restrictive TypeIn this form, the individual will fiercely limit the quantity of food consumed, characteristically ingesting a minimal amount that is well below their bodys caloric needs, effectively slowly starving him or herself. Though two classifications of anorexia nervosa exist, both types exhibit similar symptoms, such as irrational fear of weight gain and abnormal eating patterns. Emotional SymptomsDepression, anxieties. Behavioral SymptomsBingeing and self-induced vomiting to get rid of the food and may include use of laxatives, enemas, diet aids or herbal products. Hunger denialThey know that theyre starving but convincing themselves that they are not. Flat moodLack of emotion/emotionless. Anorexia: Causes (Ekern, 2017)Factors not causesCauses of this disorder are still not exactly known, but there have been many factors that are found to contribute to anorexia. Environmental Causes:MediaThe effects of the thinness culture in media, that constantly reinforce thin people as ideal stereotypes. Promotional careersProfessions and careers that promote being thin and weight loss, such as ballet and modeling. TraumasFamily and childhood traumas: childhood sexual abuse, severe trauma. Peer pressurePeer pressure among friends and co-workers to be thin or be sexy. Biological Factors:Irregular hormonesTypes of imbalance of hormones. GeneticsGenetics (the tie between anorexia and ones genes is still being heavily researched, but we know that genetics is a part of the story). Nutritional DeficienciesAnorexia: Treatment (Berger, 2016)The biggest challenge in treating anorexia nervosa is helping the person recognize that they have an illness. Most people with anorexia deny that they have an eating disorder. They often seek treatment only when their condition is serious. Set GoalsGoals of treatment are to restore normal body weight and eating habits. A weight-gain of 1 to 3 pounds (lb) or 0.5 to 1.5 kilograms (kg) per week is considered a safe goal.
